Understanding the Role of Dentin

In school, we learn a lot about the parts of the tooth. Some parts we get to see every day, while others are covered and we do not discuss them on a daily basis. However, this does not mean that they are not important. The idea is to take care of your teeth and oral health in general, so that the unseen and often not discussed areas remain healthy. The dentin is one of these unseen parts of the tooth. Protected on top by the enamel and below by the root cementum, the dentin can be termed as the heart of the tooth.

What Makes Up the Dentin?

The dentin is the largest part of the tooth. It is hard, porous and is light yellow in color. It is made up of 70% inorganic matter, water and 30% organic matter. The inorganic matter is where we have minerals of phosphate and calcium, which combine to form small particles of hydroxyapatite which resemble those in the enamel.

What Is the Use Of The Dentin?

The dentin, unlike the enamel has the capacity to grow and repair itself. At the junction of the root cementum and the tooth enamel, there are tiny tubules which run throughout the area. These tubules and the pulp aid in the process of regeneration. This allows for growth and repair. The dentin is grown and mineralized by cells from the pulp, which reach into the tiny tubules. This is also the area that allows for nerves to transmit pain. Unlike the enamel, the dentin has real time passing of stimuli which is then felt by the patient.
