A cracked tooth may seem like something that would be obvious, but this isn’t always the case. When the crack is small enough, you may not have any symptoms at all, or symptoms may come and go, and it’s very possible to have a cracked tooth and have no idea that you have it. Although some cracks are harmless, you still want to know if you have one so that you can schedule an appointment with our office.
What Are the Symptoms of a Cracked Tooth?
If you’ve noticed any of the following symptoms, you may have a cracked tooth.
Swollen gums around a tooth
Pain when chewing or biting
Teeth that are sensitive to sweet foods and beverages
Sudden sensitivity to hot or cold beverages and foods
Discomfort in the teeth or gums that is difficult to pinpoint
Intermittent pain
Because pain from a cracked tooth typically comes and goes and a crack can be very small, it can be hard for you or your dentist to find exactly where it is.
What Could Have Cracked My Tooth?
Sometimes it helps to know the causes of a cracked tooth to determine if you may have experienced any of them. This can give you more of an idea about whether your tooth was cracked at some point. Try to remember if you have bitten down on something hard that didn’t cause immediate problems. A cracked tooth can also be the result of grinding your teeth when you sleep or an injury to the face or jaw. Old fillings that are larger can weaken tooth structure, causing a crack, as well as sudden changes in temperature.
What Should I Do if I Think I May Have a Cracked Tooth?
You don’t want to allow a cracked tooth to go neglected because it can cause serious problems with both your oral and overall health. If you suspect you may have one, it’s essential that you contact our offices immediately to rule out other causes and to treat the tooth before more costly dental procedures are needed.
